Hungarian scoring machine for foil and epee disguised as a telephone. This curious piece is from the collection of material donated to the Archive by Maestro Ferenc Marki’s family. It appears to be a working scoring device although I haven’t attempted to plug it in, nor am I likely to. When it was made or by whom is unknown. If it was made as a gag, it certainly seems to have been thoroughly done. It didn’t come with a handset. I wonder if that functioned as the buzzer? It may also have buzzers built in. I won’t take it apart to find out; it’s too cool just as it is.

I was going to ask what it looks like inside only to read our comment that you wont take it apart – totally understandable that you wont….
By looking at it i am trying to work out how it worked…
i can’t see any external lights and only single plugs not 3 pin…. but the clear labels for foil and epee….
looking at it maybe it was made by someone where no local electrical signalling equipment was available or was too expensive….
