The Halberstadt Women’s Foil trophy, circa 1956. This foil was won by Fran Carter, the name she is best known by. Married three times, in 1956 she was known as Fran Matthies. The Halberstadt Women’s Foil was held annually beginning in 1952. Tommy Angell won the first, third, fourth and sixth editions, at least, with Fran winning this, the fifth, and Eleanor Turney winning outing number two. Hans would create a unique foil for the winner, always slightly different from the one before. Eleanor Turney’s foil is also part of the West Coast Fencing Archive collection and has been featured in an earlier Relic Spotlight.
