1935 medal from the Southern California division of the AFLA. An excellent example of hand engraving on the back of this medal. This was purchased from Ebay along with a number of Ralph Faulkner medals. Presumably this was one of his, as well. The pantograph, a machine that made it possible to engrave small object like this using letter templates to greatly increase accuracy and repeatability, was invented in 1938. Prior to that time, these types of engraving tasks were done by hand using metal carving tools.
